Baptist to launch joint venture ASC network

Jacksonville, Fla.-based Baptist Health and Compass Surgical Partners plan to launch a joint network of ambulatory surgery centers branded as Horizon Surgery Center.

The first ASC will be on the campus of Baptist Medical Center Beaches in Jacksonville, which is set to open in early 2024.

Baptist, through its for-profit subsidiary Pavilion Health Services, and Compass aim to open several more ASCs in Northeast Florida by acquiring existing surgery centers and upgrading outpatient sites owned by the health system.

The initial Horizon Surgery Center locations will be developed in hospital-owned buildings to facilitate rapid launches that will accelerate the Baptist's ASC strategy.

"Through our collaboration with physicians, the ASCs will help us bring even more value to the community by providing patients with an option for high-quality surgery in a lower-cost setting," Baptist COO Matthew Zuino said in a Jan. 4 news release. "By working together with Compass, we aim to make excellent outpatient surgical care even more affordable and accessible to our growing community."

Compass also recently partnered with Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health, a 48-hospital system, to develop more than 30 ASCs across multiple states.

Financial terms of the partnerships were not disclosed.
