Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health plans to spend more than $1 billion to upgrade and expand several facilities across its network — representing the largest capital investment in the health system's history, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Here are six things to know:
1. While health system officials released few details of the plan, Atrium Health CEO Gene Wood said the initiative will include investments in technology and new facilities to reposition the system for the next 50 years. More detailed plans are expected in December for Atrium board approval.
2. One rendering of the plan, announced at Atrium's quarterly board meeting, included construction of a multistory building at its flagship campus that will offer specialty care such as heart and vascular procedures and neurological services.
3. Atrium also is considering constructing a new bed tower in Pineville, N.C., to accommodate patient volume growth.
4. Other proposals include projects to modernize facilities and use technology to improve workflow and efficiency.
5. A majority of funding for the capital investment would come from Atrium revenue, although some philanthropic donations may support the projects.
6. If approved, the projects would take place over a seven-year period.
