Alabama hospital opens $19M pediatric ER

Mobile, Ala.-based USA Health Children's and Women's Hospital opened a $19 million pediatric emergency center for patients and their families on March 11.

USA Health raised $14.2 million of the $19 million total cost for renovation, construction, and equipment, a spokesperson for USA Health said in an email shared with Becker's.

The 19,000-square-foot facility, which more than doubles the former emergency department, comprises more than 30 treatment areas, including 25 private treatment rooms, two behavioral health rooms, major medical treatment and resuscitation areas, an isolation area, and a private space for pediatric sexual assault patient care.

Social workers, child life specialists, a sensory room, and areas for transport are also on hand at the pediatric ED, according to USA Health's website.

It is the state's only ED certified "to have 100% pediatric readiness as determined by the Alabama Department of Public Health," according to a March 11 USA Health news release.

USA Health is an academic health system with more than 5,200 employees, including 180 academic physicians.
