Patients prefer boarding in an inpatient hallway rather than in an emergency department hallway, according to a study in The Journal of Emergency Medicine.
Researchers surveyed admitted ED patients who were first boarded in a hallway in the ED and then transferred to inpatient hallways. Of 105 patients, 85 percent preferred the inpatient hallway based on their overall experience. Patients also gave their preference based on eight individual items. Here are the percentages of patients who preferred the inpatient hallway for each item:
Rest — 85 percent
Safety — 83 percent
Confidentiality — 82 percent
Treatment — 78 percent
Comfort — 79 percent
Quiet — 84 percent
Staff availability — 84 percent
Privacy — 84 percent
