Study: Diabetic Children With Medicaid Revisited ED More Often Than Those With Private Insurance

Among children older than six years old presenting to the emergency department with diabetes, those covered by Medicaid return to the ED more often than those with commercial insurance, according to a study in Pediatric Emergency Care.

Researchers studied ED charts and billing data for children up to 18 years old who presented to the ED with diabetes over a four-year period.

In addition to type of insurance and age, sex and income also affected the rate of ED return visits. For example, diabetic girls were more likely to return to the ED than boys were.
