Study: Advanced Nursing Interventions Decrease ED Length of Stay

Implementing advanced nursing interventions at triage may shorten patients' time in emergency department rooms, freeing up space for other patients, according to a study in Journal of Emergency Nursing.

Researchers studied the effect of advanced nursing intervention at triage on ED length of stay for patients with a chief complaint of abdominal pain and Emergency Severity Index level 3. They found that advanced nursing interventions at triage increased patients' time in the department and decreased their time in the treatment room. Decreased time spent in the room makes more beds available for sicker patients, according to the study.
