Report: 55% of Hospitals in Quality Program Reduced Time Spent in ED by 30 Minutes

Hospitals participating in the Increasing Throughput initiative under Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Aligning Forces for Quality made significant improvements in emergency department patient flow, according to an AF4Q report.

Forty hospitals participated in the initiative to increase throughput, which was one of three initiatives under AF4Q's 18-month program.

Here are some of the results of the initiative:

•    Ten thousand patients avoided leaving the ED before care was provided.
•    Fifty-five percent of participating hospitals reduced the time patients spent in their EDs by an average of 30 minutes.
•    The greatest improvement in the average time patients spend in the ED before admission was a reduction of 101 minutes.
•    The greatest improvement of the average time patients spend in the ED before discharge was a reduction of 89 minutes.
•    Sixteen hospitals reduced their boarding time by up to 43 percent.
•    Twenty-two hospitals reduced the rate patients leave the hospital before being seen by up to 19.5 percent.
