Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, Calif., has begun construction on a major $394 million expansion project, according to The North Bay Business Journal.
Here are eight things to know about the project.
1. The expansion will replace the current hospital with a new four-story, 260,000-square-foot hospital building and a five-story, 100,000-square-foot ambulatory services building.
2. The new facilities will feature larger operating rooms and an emergency department with increased diagnostic and treatment capabilities that aim to improve efficiency and reduce wait times.
3. The labor and delivery department will include 12 patient beds and the west wing will have 60 private rooms, 19 of which can accommodate double beds in an emergency.
4. Project plans also include a new emergency drop-off area and a bigger loading dock to accommodate more traffic and equipment.
5. The new hospital is designed to be LEED-certified and will comply with the latest seismic safety and earthquake resistance structural codes.
6. The project also includes plans for two parking structures, the excavation for which began in April.
7. Marin General Hospital will remain open during construction, according to the project plans.
8. Groundbreaking for the new hospital is slated for January 2016, and it is expected to open in spring or summer 2020.
