Medical staff at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez, Calif., are calling for an emergency department expansion to stem what they say are dangerous crowding levels, according to a Contra Costa Times report.
Contra Costa Regional Medical Center's ED has 18 exam rooms and is designed to accommodate 30,000 patients annually. However, hospital physicians say nearly twice that volume visit the ED, according to the report.
While the hospital plans to open six new exam rooms for urgent care patients by November, hospital administrators say other solutions to ED crowding and long wait times are needed, according to the report. For example, hospital administrators plan to provide easier access to primary care and improve patient flow, according to the report.
