Community Health Network announces $235M construction projects: 10 things to know

Indianapolis-based Community Health Network has announced $235 million investment in two new construction projects.

"As healthcare continues to evolve, Community Health Network will strive to provide access to quality care with an emphasis on the overall patient experience," said Bryan Mills, president and CEO of Community Health Network, regarding the construction of a new hospital campus and a cancer center.

Here are 10 things to know about the projects.

1. The first project will include a $175 million hospital on the campus of Community Hospital East in Indianapolis.

2. Construction on Community Hospital East is scheduled to break ground in July.

3. The Community Hospital East project originally called for major renovations to a decades-old hospital but changed to the construction of an entirely new facility last fall.

4. Plans for the hospital include demolishing four buildings on the campus, building a new hospital tower housing inpatient and procedural rooms, moving the organization's Family Medicine Center and constructing a new emergency department.

5. The redeveloped project is expected to be completed two years sooner than the original renovation plan with virtually no disruption to patient care.

6. The second project entails expanding oncology services with a new cancer center on the campus of Community Hospital North in Indianapolis.

7. The cancer center is estimated to cost $60 million and will begin construction early this fall.

8. Current plans for Community Cancer Center North have the facility at three stories and 104,000 square feet.

9. Patients, physicians and staff helped design the cancer center, which will allow patients to control room temperature, lighting, entertainment, food choices and privacy.

10. Other features include wellness facilities, quiet workspaces, public Wi-Fi and a nature garden.

"At Community Hospital East, we realized building a new hospital for the future was, in the end, a better avenue than renovating antiquated buildings meant for a different time in our history," said Mr. Mills. "At Community Hospital North, increases in patient volume dictated the need for a new cancer center. Our commitment to Indianapolis remains strong."
