AHA: Policy Changes Needed to Sustain Hospitals' Essential Standby Role

Policy changes are needed to sustain hospitals' standby role — providing 24/7 access to care, serving as a safety net and managing disaster readiness and response, according to an American Hospital Association report.

The report, "Prepared to Care: The 24/7 Standby Role of America's Hospitals," discusses hospitals' critical role in being prepared to deliver care at any hour, to any patient and in any situation. The report illustrates the growing demand on hospitals to provide these standby services while the hospitals do not get directly reimbursed for them.

The AHA report asks economic and policy questions that must be addressed to ensure hospitals can continue to play its standby role.
