Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center has opened in Jacksonville, Fla., making world-renowned cancer care available in the area.
Here are nine things to know about the new facility.
1. It is located on the campus of Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville.
2. Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center opened with about 240 employees, including more than 40 physicians with significant expertise in major oncology specialties, including breast, gynecological oncology, urology, gastrointestinal, thoracic, neurological oncology, colorectal, lung, prostate, melanoma and sarcoma, among others.
3. The facility also offers specialists in oncology navigation, nursing, nutrition, pharmacy, genetics, personal counseling, psychological care, pastoral care, and social services.
4. Joe "Bill" Putnam Jr., MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon who most recently served as chairman of the department of thoracic surgery at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center , is medical director of Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center.
5. The center is modeled after MD Anderson Cancer Center's outpatient clinics in Houston.
6. The facility is the result of a partnership between MD Anderson Cancer Center and Jacksonville-based Baptist Health "to transform cancer care in the Southeastern U.S. by replicating MD Anderson's proven model of care in north Florida," officials said.
7. Through the partnership, Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center will provide adult patients and their families with access to the same technologies, treatment protocols and treatment options as MD Anderson.
8. Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center is the third partner member of MD Anderson Cancer Network, with full clinical and operational integration. MD Anderson's other two partners are Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center with Banner Health in Gilbert, Ariz., and MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper with Cooper University Health Care in Camden, N.J.
9. A new Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center building will be designed and constructed across the street, as growth of the center is anticipated. The new building is expected to open in early 2018.
