4 findings on predicted ED volumes

As payment and utilization structures in healthcare change, so too may usage patterns. The following are four findings on executives' predictions for emergency department volumes in the next five years, from a Kurt Salmon report, "Utilization of Healthcare Services."

  • More than 40 percent of executives expect changes in emergency service utilization of at least 5 percent, whether that change is growth or loss of patient volume.
  • Fifty-three percent of executives expect growth in ED utilization overall.
  • Approximately 10 percent of executives expect an ED utilization decrease of between 5 percent and 10 percent.
  • Five percent of executives expect a decrease in ED utilization of more than 10 percent.
