As payment and utilization structures in healthcare change, so too may usage patterns. The following are four findings on executives' predictions for emergency department volumes in the next five years, from a Kurt Salmon report, "Utilization of Healthcare Services."
- More than 40 percent of executives expect changes in emergency service utilization of at least 5 percent, whether that change is growth or loss of patient volume.
- Fifty-three percent of executives expect growth in ED utilization overall.
- Approximately 10 percent of executives expect an ED utilization decrease of between 5 percent and 10 percent.
- Five percent of executives expect a decrease in ED utilization of more than 10 percent.
