What is emergency care like in California? The following are 13 statistics on emergency care in that state, from the California Office of Statewide Planning & Development and the American College of Emergency Physicians, collected by the Los Angeles Daily News.

Number of EDs in 2013: 332

Decade change in number of EDs: 2 percent down (from 2004)

EDs per capita: 6.7 per 1 million residents

Patient volume in 2013: 12.45 million

Decade change in patient volume: 37 percent increase (from 2004)

Patients treated and released: 86 percent

Patients admitted as inpatients: 14 percent (55 percent of all admissions)

Patient payment methods:     

  • Private: 30 percent
  • Medi-Cal: 30 percent
  • Medicare: 17 percent
  • Uninsured: 15 percent
  • Other: 7 percent
