Google is expanding or opening offices in nine states and plans to hire "thousands of people" from across the U.S. in 2018, CEO Sundar Pichai said during an earnings call Thursday, according to CNN.
Though its headquarters are in Mountain View, Calif., Google has an office or data center in 21 states. A single Google data centers employs between 70 and 350 people, but tech companies usually earn local and state tax incentives for picking certain locations, CNN noted.
The company is also planning an expansion into San Jose, just 13 miles from its Silicon Valley home.
"Last year in the U.S. we grew faster outside the Bay Area than in the Bay Area. To support this growth, we will be making significant investments in offices across nine states, including Colorado and Michigan," Mr. Pichai said, according to CNN.
Google's parent company, Alphabet, is also set to open or build five additional data centers in the U.S. in 2018. It currently operates six open data centers.
