After opening its new cardiovascular center last week, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak (Mich.) has scaled down its proton beam therapy center plans from $159 million to $75 million, according to a Detroit News report.
Beaumont has asked Michigan’s Certificate of Need Commission to amend its original request, which was approved in 2008. The original plans were halted due to a lack of financing.
Now, under revised plans, construction on the center will begin by the end of 2013. The rare cancer treatment offered at the center will involve proton beams, which more precisely target tumors with less effect on surrounding tissues and organs.
