Cleveland Clinic Selects 2011’s Top 10 Medical Innovations

Cleveland Clinic has selected its top 10 medical innovations for 2011, including discoveries such as pill-sized cameras and minimally invasive weight-loss surgical procedures, according to a press release.

The innovations, which include medical devices, techniques, therapies and approaches, were selected by a panel of Clinic physicians and scientists. The discoveries had to meet the following criteria: (1) have significant potential for short-term clinical impact, (2) have a high probability of success, (3) be on the market or close to being introduced, and (4) have sufficient data available to support its nomination.
Here are the winners:

1.    Capsule endoscopy for diagnosis of pediatric GI disorders
2.    Oral disease-modifying treatment for multiple sclerosis
3.    Exhaled nitric oxide breath analysis for diagnosing asthma
4.    Transoral gastroplasty
5.    Telehealth monitoring for heart failure patients
6.    Hepatitis C protease-inhibiting drugs
7.    JUPITER study and statins for healthy individuals
8.    First therapeutic cancer vaccine approved by the FDA
9.    Anti-CTLA-4 drug, a targeted T-cell antibody for metastatic melanoma
10.    New molecular imaging biomarker for early detection of Alzheimer's disease
