Cleveland Clinic Chair Robert Rich Wants to Focus on Patient Quality

Robert E. Rich Jr., the succeeding chairman of Cleveland Clinic's board of directors, says he wants to bring the Clinic's quality and patient safety standards and procedures to the forefront of the agenda, according to a Plain Dealer report.

Mr. Rich, 70, will assume his position as chairman in March when the board convenes, replacing A. Malachi Mixon, III, who stepped down in December. Mr. Rich is the chairman of Rich Products, his family-owned food company which also happens to be the country's largest frozen foods manufacturer, selling more than 2,000 products. He now resides in Florida.

Mr. Rich, who is a current or former member of nearly 20 boards, says he hopes the Clinic board first tackles committee structures as well. "The best boards I've served on have been the most active and effectively engaged committees," Mr. Rich said in the report. Other focuses include succession planning and strengthening relations with community hospitals.

In the article, Mr. Rich also said he plans to go deeper on some issues than Mr. Mixon did. "Community is very important to me," says Mr. Rich. "I think that's something that I'll get personally involved in a little more."
