Here are 10 new surgery center projects planned, opened or developed by hospitals, according to various news reports.
1. Expansion of Arizona's Tuscon Medical Center to include surgery center. Tucson (Ariz.) Medical Center is undergoing a $109 million expansion that includes development of a new surgery center. The surgery center is included in a new building that will also house 24 operating rooms, 40 private patient rooms and space leased by the Tucson Orthopaedic Institute. The building is expected to open in April 2013. The hospital has already completed a number of projects as part of the expansion, including expanded pediatrics and mother/baby postpartum units and a new garage.
2. New California surgery center for Presbyterian Intercommunity to open in fall 2012. The Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital Foundation, on behalf of Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier, Calif., is hosting a fundraising event later this month to benefit the hospital's new surgery center under development as part of a larger plaza tower project. The tower is scheduled to open in August. Construction for the six-floor, 237,750-square-foot building began in March 2010.
3. New clinic for Huron Regional in South Dakota to include surgical center. Huron (S.D.) Regional Medical Center has broken ground on a new Huron clinic that will include a surgical center. It will be 24,000-square-foor facility with construction costs of $4.7 million and a fill project budget of approximate $6.1 million. In addition to the surgical center, the clinic will include a laboratory and radiology services. The building is designed to accommodate a 22,000-square-foot addition. Construction is scheduled to be completed by April 2013.
4. Cleveland Clinic's Marymount Hospital opens new Ohio surgery center in Garfield Heights. Cleveland Clinic has announced the opening of a new surgery center for Marymount Hospital, its hospital in Garfield Heights, Ohio. The surgery center features seven operating rooms and one minor procedure room. It will begin serving patients in late March, and will offer surgical services in a number of specialties including endoscopy, ENT, general surgery, orthopedics, pain management and urology. Future development is planned for the surgery center, including new pre-and post-operative rooms, a new PACU and a new endoscopy department.
5. Presbyterian Healthcare opens new North Carolina surgery center in Charlotte. Presbyterian Healthcare, based in Charlotte, N.C., has announced the opening of a new surgery center in Charlotte. Presbyterian Outpatient Surgery Center is a 19,600-square-foot-facility that officially opened Feb. 20 and held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Feb. 29. The center includes six operating rooms and one endoscopy procedure room. It combines ophthalmology, pediatric endoscopy and a diagnostic breast center.
6. Cook Children's expansion includes new Texas surgery center in Fort Worth. A new outpatient surgery center is included in a $250 million expansion of Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The expansion, named the Dodson Specialty Clinics building, will house 18 new pediatric subspecialty clinics, and will include the surgery center, a cancer center, heart center and neuroscience. The Dodson Surgery Center will be dedicated to pediatric patients needing outpatient procedures such as eyes, ENT, minor orthopedics and general surgery. It includes six operating suites for outpatient procedures, including two eye surgery suites.
7. Oakleaf Surgical Hospital to build new Wisconsin surgery center in Altoona. OakLeaf Surgical Hospital, based in Eau Claire, Wis., will build a new ambulatory surgery center in Altoona, Wis., as part of a larger medical center project. The planned $25 million medical center is expected to be comprised of a roughly 20,000-square-foot ASC and 64,000-square-foot hospital. While the project has yet to be finalized, the Altoona City Council recently voted to enter into an exclusivity agreement with OakLeaf Surgical so the deal can be completed. Officials expect the purchase and development agreement to be finished within 90 days, and then the plan falls for groundbreaking in late summer or early fall.
8. New surgery center for Indiana University Health Saxony opens in Indianapolis. A new ambulatory surgery center on the Indiana University Health Saxony campus in Indianapolis has opened. The outpatient surgery center is included in a $30 million, 120,000-square-foot medical office building that includes other services and a café. Birmingham, Ala.-based Johnson Development oversaw the MOBs development, and will provide management for the building.
9. Wyoming Medical Center's $40m expansion to include orthopedic and spine surgery center. Wyoming Medical Center officials have announced they will proceed with a $40 million expansion and renovation, which will include an orthopedic and spine surgery center. According to WMC president and CEO Vickie Diamond, the project will start in mid-March with staging and then demolition of the existing west wing. The hospital will then construct a new four-story tower with 90,000 square feet of space, including an orthopedic and spine surgery center and a maternity and obstetrics center.
10. New East Texas Medical Center facility in Quitman to include surgery center. Officials of the East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System and the Wood County Central Hospital District have announced plans for a new $35 million facility in Quitman, Texas, that will include a surgery center. The new ETMC Quitman, which will replace an existing facility and is expected to measure more than 84,000 square feet, will include a surgery center with two operating rooms and a GI lab. Other areas of the facility will include an emergency department, nursing unit, imaging services and an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation center.
