10 Hospitals & Health Systems Recently Developing Surgery Centers

Here are 10 hospitals that recently announced or developed surgery centers, according to various news reports.

1. Erie (Pa.) Shriners Hospital. Erie (Pa.) Shriners Hospital for Children has become an ambulatory surgery center and outpatient center. The facility is no longer a hospital after the Pennsylvania DOH approved licensing the facility as an ASC on April 24. It is now called the Erie Ambulatory Surgery Center and Erie Outpatient Specialty Care Center.

2. Winchester (Mass.) Hospital. Winchester (Mass.) Hospital will hold a grand opening celebration for its new ambulatory surgery center on May 8. The 31,200-square-foot ASC will provide services in specialties including orthopedic, hand, podiatry, urology, gynecology and otolaryngology surgery. The grand opening celebration will coincide with the grand opening of a new cancer center and a celebration of hospital's centennial anniversary.

3. Maury Regional Medical Center (Columbia, Tenn.). Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, Tenn., recently received approval from the Tennessee Health Services and Development Agency to build an ASC at its new Spring Hill facility. The surgery center will complement the services already planned for the $7.9 million, 62,365-square-foot facility being built near Port Royal Road and Reserve Boulevard. The Spring Hill facility is expected to be complete by October.

4. San Carlos (Calif.) Medical Center. Palo Alto Medical Foundation, a Sutter Health affiliate based in Mountain View, Calif., has announced it will break ground on a new medical center in San Carlos, Calif., that will include an outpatient surgery center. The PAMF San Carlos Center will be constructed in two phases. The first phase, with construction scheduled to commence soon, will be development of an outpatient medical center that will initially house 75 physicians, the ASC, an urgent care center, and laboratory and diagnostic imaging departments.

5. WellSpan Health (York, Pa.).
WellSpan Health has opened its $71 million surgery and rehabilitation hospital in York Township. The 95,000-square-foot facility has 48 beds for rehab patients and 25 beds for orthopedic patients, along with four operating rooms. About 150 employees were hired for the opening and about 240 total will be hired by mid-2014. The rehab and surgery center will also open up space and volume capacity at the health system's York Hospital, allowing it to transition patients more easily from the emergency room to inpatient beds.

6. Nationwide Children's Hospital (Westerville, Ohio). Nationwide Children's Hospital in Westerville, Ohio, has opened its first suburban ambulatory surgery center. The $18.4 million, 46,000-square-foot center houses a floor of ambulatory surgery operating rooms as well as a second floor of medical and surgical pediatric subspecialty suites. The center is an extension of the current surgical services on the main campus that gives families an option for convenient access to a full spectrum of pediatric surgical services.

7. Olean (N.Y.) General Hospital. Olean (N.Y.) General Hospital is scheduled to open a new ambulatory surgery center in Olean in May. The Olean General Hospital Outpatient Surgery Center, which will be located across from the hospital's main campus, is a $10.3 million project consisting of a more than 15,000-square-foot addition and a complete renovation of about 6,400 square feet of existing space. Features of the surgery center include four new operating suites and three endoscopy labs.

8. Riverview (N.J.) Medical Center. Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, N.J., has announced it has surpassed its fundraising goal for construction of a new 22,000-square-foot surgery center in Red Bank. The surgery center project, which is already underway, will include two specialty surgical suites, a renovated post-anesthesia care area, a relocated and renovated surgical day stay and a conference and educational center, according to the release.

9. Johnson Memorial Hospital (Franklin, Ind.).
Johnson Memorial Hospital will open the first phase of its surgery center April 30. The $14 million expansion and renovation project has added operating rooms as well as new space for surgical preparation and recovery. According to Bill Oakes, director of business development, the surgery center will enhance the hospital's abilities to perform surgery and allow greater use of new technology.

10. Poudre (Colo.) Valley Health System.
Poudre Valley Health System, based in Fort Collins, Colo., has broken ground on a new ambulatory surgery center in Greeley. The ASC will be included in a new 22,000-square-foot facility. In addition to the same-day surgery center, the facility will include an emergency care center. The surgery center will feature two operating rooms. Outpatient surgery services will be offered for select general and elective surgeries in the areas of endoscopy, gastroenterology, orthopedics and urology. Other outpatient surgeries will be added as needs arise, according to the hospital.
