The rate of accidental awareness under general anesthesia is extremely rare, about one in 15,000, according to U.S. News & World Report.
These recent findings were published in the United Kingdom journals Anesthesia and The British Journal of Anaesthesia and contradict previous research that suggested rates could be as high as one in 500 patients, according to the report. The most recent study also found only 2 percent of anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists routinely use brain monitoring equipment to observe patient consciousness.
Researchers based the results on 2011 information from all senior anesthetists at National Health Service hospitals regarding cases of general anesthesia accidental awareness.
