Hugh V. Morgan, CMPE, director of quality assurance at Somnia Anesthesia, presented a session on "Understanding Anesthesia Financial Drivers" at the annual meeting of Becker's Hospital Review in Chicago on May 20.
In his presentation, Mr. Morgan explained the key financial drivers in anesthesia services and demonstrated how anesthesia staffing, revenue cycle management, patient and surgeon satisfaction and quality affect operating room and hospital bottom line.
He said that in addition to effective clinical leadership and financial management, the keys to optimal anesthesia performance include quantifiable quality, as described in the proposed accountable care organization rules, and transparency.
Mr. Morgan challenged the session attendees to consider the value and ROI of their anesthesia program, its transparency and accountability, and how its performance impacts other areas of the hospital.
The Becker's Hospital Review annual meeting was attended by healthcare business and strategy leaders from around the country and focused on sharing strategies for improving hospitals and their finances during the current challenging economy.
