Hospital Drug Shortage Survey Mirrors Results of American Society of Anesthesiologists Survey

A recent American Hospital Association survey on hospital drug shortages mirrored the results of an American Society of Anesthesiologists drug shortage survey conducted in April 2011, according to an ASA release.

The AHA survey found that 99.5 percent of hospitals were affected by drug shortages, and 95 percent of hospitals experienced a shortage that impacted surgery or anesthesia. The survey also found that shortages resulted in delay of patient treatment, patients receiving less effective drugs and patients experiencing adverse outcomes.

The ASA will continue to work closely with the AHA to address the issue of drug shortages.
