Des Moines, Iowa-based Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield reported its accountable care organizations, which include contracts with 13 hospitals and clinic systems, saved $35 million last year.
Here are five other key statistics from the report:
1. The ACOs reduced hospital readmissions by more than 22 percent, inpatient admissions by about 8 percent and emergency department visits by almost 4 percent.
2. Primary care physicians saw 13,254 additional Wellmark members and an additional 763 children were treated.
3. Mammograms were administered to an additional 995 women and colon cancer screenings were administered to an additional 243 members.
4. Wellmark's quality scores increased 4 percent.
5. The ACOs provided care to 179,000 Wellmark members.
