UNC Health, Cigna launch collaborative care initiative

Cigna is teaming up with Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care and its clinically integrated network, UNC Health Alliance, to launch a collaborative care program similar to an accountable care organization beginning Jan. 1.

This program will be the ninth of its kind run by Cigna in North and South Carolina, and one of roughly 160 similar programs around the country. The initiative will help close gaps in care and improve coordination for patients with Cigna plans who see a primary care physician part of the UNC Health Alliance.

"Cigna's collaborative care approach provides a platform for physician collaboration and access to additional information from Cigna that allows our providers to deliver more efficient and effective care," Seth Glickman, MD, UNC Health Alliance president, said in a statement. "This program is closely aligned with the UNC Health Alliance's goal of providing patient-centered, coordinated, high-quality healthcare for residents of North Carolina."

To achieve better care coordination, UNC Health Alliance registered nurse clinical care coordinators will help patients navigate their care and will work directly with Cigna case managers, who can provide patient-specific data to support care decisions.

UNC Health Alliance providers will be compensated for the services they provide, as well as for the quality and efficiency with which they deliver those services.
