North Carolina Officials Roll Out Plan for Medicaid ACOs

Officials from North Carolina's health department are proposing accountable care organizations for the state's Medicaid populations, according to a Charlotte Observer report.

North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is proposing the ACO model for the state's Medicaid program, under which providers would continue to be paid as they are now, but ACOs would be able to keep some of the savings from Medicaid if providers kept costs below projections.

DHHS will provide a detailed plan to the Medicaid advisory committee before sending it to the legislature next month. The plan could be taken up by lawmakers in the short session, which starts in May, according to the report.

Under the DHHS timeline, the accountable care networks wouldn't start signing up healthcare providers until next year.

ACOs for Medicaid patients are still one of the rarer breeds of the model, but Oregon is one state that has pioneered this effort.
