Anthem Blue Cross and Torrance, Calif.-based HealthCare Partners, a physician group, have announced they saved $4.7M in the first half of 2013 by partnering to form an accountable care organization.
Under the ACO, the two organizations provide coordinated care to 55,000 patients. The $4.7 million is savings was calculated by comparing costs associated with patients receiving care through the ACO to other patients in southern California who were not included in the accountable care program.
Since forming the ACO, Anthem and HealthCare Partners were able to reduce hospital inpatient stays by 18 percent, overall admissions by 4 percent and visits for radiology and other lab tests by 4 percent.
