Health insurer Aetna and Phoenix-based Banner Health Network announced they achieved $5 million in shared savings through their accountable care collaboration in 2013.
Aetna and BHN began their collaboration in 2011. The organizations offer the Aetna Whole Health plans, which are ACO-centered, to employers and individuals in the Phoenix area.
As part of their collaboration, Aetna and BHN focused on population health. The organizations' population health management practices led to improved cancer screening rates, improved blood sugar management in diabetic members, and reduced avoidable hospital admissions.
"The success of this collaboration demonstrates that insurance carriers and providers can work together in a unified approach to provide quality, coordinated care while reducing healthcare costs," said Tom Dameron, Aetna's local market president.
