6 critical elements of a successful ACO

During a recent Brookings Institute webinar, Greger Vigen, a health actuary, highlighted some of  the components of a successful accountable care organization and provided the tools those organizations use to achieve their results.

Mr. Vigen said ACOs should do the following to become high-performing organizations. 

1. Use analytic tools and processes to understand performance over time.

2. Put a financial committee together that will be clear about the organization's financial state.

3. Have initiatives in place aimed specifically financial results.

4. Use payment reform to show how expenses could reduce revenue across multiple specific cases.

5. Use advanced clinical reporting systems.

6. Develop strong partnerships within and outside the organization to transform care.
