University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore). To minimize its effects on the environment, the University of Maryland Medical Center created the UMMC Green Team to lead the institution's sustainability and energy conservation efforts. In 2009, UMMC began multiple recycling programs to minimize regulated medical waste and maximize recycling. The hospital utilizes energy-conscious LED lighting and is working with its medical staff to share best practices for energy conservation. UMMC aims to decrease waste by donating open and unused medical supplies to developing nations or medical and nurse training schools. Under the hospital's green cleaning policies, all chemicals brought into the facility must undergo a stringent review and approval process to ensure they do not pose an environmental hazard.
