Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital-Boston. Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital opened a new 262,000-square-foot, 132-bed facility in 2013 designed with sustainability and environmentally friendly best practices in mind. The hospital includes an automatic management system that saves energy by opening and closing windows in accordance with weather conditions instead of running mechanical cooling systems. Spaulding also runs an onsite cogeneration plant that burns natural gas to produce thermal energy and electricity. The hospital earned LEED Gold certification for its commitment to renewable energy and sustainability upon opening its new facility, and is now considered a national model for inclusive design.
