Kiowa County Memorial Hospital (Greensburg, Kan.). After a tornado destroyed Kiowa County Memorial Hospital's facility in 2007, the hospital rebuilt with eco-consciousness and energy efficiency at the forefront of construction plans. In 2011, Kiowa County Memorial Hospital became the first critical access hospital in the U.S. to earn a Platinum LEED certification and the first hospital in the U.S. to operate with 100 percent renewable, carbon-neutral energy. A year later, the hospital achieved another first: using captured rainwater to flush toilets. The new hospital is 32 percent more efficient than similar ASHRAE-compliant buildings and includes a 50 kW onsite wind turbine that provides around 40 percent of the total electrical load; the hospital supplies its remaining energy through the Greensburg wind farm and has limited onsite combustion of fossil fuel.
