Steven M. Safyer, MD. CEO of Montefiore Medical Center (New York City). Dr. Safyer joined Montefiore in 1982, became senior vice president and CMO in 1998 and was appointed president and CEO at the end of 2007. After officially taking over the position in early 2008, Dr. Safyer continued to be a leader in advancing Montefiore's position as an innovative and equitable healthcare system, as well as an advocate for delivering a single standard of excellence to all, regardless of social or economic circumstances. Dr. Safyer also expanded Montefiore's footprint by strengthening the medical center's partnership with the Bronx, N.Y.-based Albert Einstein College of Medicine and by getting St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, N.Y., to agree to join Montefiore.
