Gary Kaplan, MD. Chairman and CEO of Virginia Mason Health System (Seattle). Dr. Kaplan has been CEO of Virginia Mason Health System since 2000. Throughout his career, Dr. Kaplan has won numerous awards, including the National Healthcare Award from B'nai B'rith International in 2017 and Medical Group Management/American College of Medical Practice Executives' Harry J. Harwick Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. An internal medicine physician by training, Dr. Kaplan completed his residency at Virginia Mason and continues to practice medicine there today. He also serves as the chair of the National Patient Safety Foundation Lucian Leape Institute and was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, formerly known as the Institute of Medicine, in 2013, an honor recognizing outstanding professional achievement in the medical field.
