The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinic opened its heart transplantation program in 1973, and the hospital's surgeons have performed more than 700 heart transplants since then. The hospital has a nationwide reputation for excellence and appeared as one of Truven Health Analytics' 50 top U.S. cardiovascular hospitals in 2016. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons gave University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics a three-star rating, the highest possible rating, and Blue Cross Blue Shield Association designated the hospital a Blue Distinction Center for cardiac care.
