Stanford Health Care surgeons performed the first successful U.S. heart transplant in 1968; since then, the health system's cardiovascular services have grown to see more than 5,000 patients annually. Currently, the hospital is participating in 30 cardiac arrhythmia and interventional cardiology clinical trials. U.S. News & World Report recognized Stanford Health Care's flagship hospital, Stanford Hospital, among the top 20 institutions across the nation for adult cardiology and heart surgeries in 2017-18. Within the state of California, CareChex ranked Stanford Hospital No. 11 for cardiac surgery.
