Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital. This year marks Tampa General Hospital's eighth consecutive year on U.S. News & World Report's list of the top 50 hospitals in the nation for cardiology and heart surgery. The Magnet-designated hospital is certified by The Joint Commission for heart failure and ventricular assist devices. Its 77,000-square-foot cardiovascular center has five cardiac-specific operating rooms and six cardiac catheterization laboratories. However, in what is perhaps its greatest claim to cardiac fame, Tampa General was the site of the first successful heart transplant in Florida, and today has more than 500 transplants under its belt, making its program one of the busiest in the nation.
