Lifespan (Providence, R.I.).The Lifespan Orthopedics Institute spans four of Lifespan health system's hospitals and includes The Total Joint Center located at Providence-based Miriam Hospital. The Total Joint Center's total case volume hit 1,676 in 2016, and its enrollment in the Function and Outcomes Research for Comparative Effectiveness in Total Joint Replacement initiative, a national database registry for total joint replacement procedures, reached 2,138 orthopedic patients. In addition to providing quality care, Lifespan physicians and scientists focus on research to advance the field. Most of Lifespan's basic musculoskeletal research is conducted at Providence-based Rhode Island Hospital, where the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence for Skeletal Health and Repair is based. In 2012, the National Institutes of Health awarded the COBRE a $10.8 million Phase II grant to fund research on cartilage and joint health. CareChex ranked Lifespan's three hospitals among the top 10 hospitals for orthopedic care in Rhode Island.
