In addition to being able to treat a plethora of orthopedic conditions, Duke University Hospital's orthopedic department offers 24-hour access to appointments, as well as orthopedic urgent care services at two locations during the week. The department's joint replacement surgeons have conducted 10,000-plus joint replacement surgeries during a two-year period and perform more than 200 shoulder joint replacement surgeries annually. The hospital also provides treatment for uncommon musculoskeletal conditions such as avascular necrosis, or bone death due to a loss of blood supply to the bone. Duke University Hospital was ranked among the top 50 hospitals for orthopedics for 2017-18 by U.S. News & World Report and is a Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Blue Distinction Center+ for knee and hip replacement.
