In 1971, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center became one of the nation's first institutions to earn the National Cancer Institute's comprehensive cancer center designation. In 2016, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center clinicians cared for approximately 135,000 patients and enrolled more than 7,500 patients in clinical trials. U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center No. 1 in cancer care for 2017-18. MD Anderson has held the No. 1 or 2 ranking in cancer care from U.S. News for 27 consecutive years.
