St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (Memphis, Tenn.). Founded by actor Danny Thomas in 1964, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital provides care to children with cancer from across the world. It costs more than $2 million per day to run St. Jude, and 75 percent of the hospital's budgeted costs are covered by public contributions. The St. Jude — Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project seeks to identify the origins of childhood cancer and develop new cures. U.S. News & World Report ranked St. Jude among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for cancer care and the No. 1 hospital for pediatric oncology in 2017-18.
