In 2014, the cancer center at Rush University Medical Center received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Rush's cancer center has been distinguished as one of the top 50 cancer programs in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital's outpatient cancer center features technology that allows physicians and patients to review diagnostic tests together, private and semi-private chemotherapy infusion stations and an educational resource center for patients. Dr. Roswell Park — the institute's founder — accurately predicted that cancer would become a leading cause of death in the United States and across the world. The institute is one of the oldest in the country to earn designation from the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center, and it is one of five centers in New York to receive designation from Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for Complex & Rare cancers.
