CareChex ranked Banner — University Medical Center Phoenix, formerly Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, as the No. 19 hospital in the nation for major neurological surgery for 2017. Healthgrades recognized the hospital for excellence in stroke care in both 2015 and 2016. Banner's Alzheimer's Institute leads the Alzheimer's Prevention Initiative, which is an international collaboration aimed at developing promising therapies for the disease. On Nov. 27, BAI was featured on CBS' 60 Minutes. The two-part feature focused on the trial of an experimental treatment designed to prevent Alzheimer's in members of the world's largest autosomal dominant Alzheimer's kindred in Colombia, South America. Among the kindred of 5,000 living family members, 1,000 carry a genetic mutation which prompts early-onset Alzheimer's at approximately 45 years of age.
