UAB Hospital | 100 Great Hospitals in America 2015

UAB Hospital (Birmingham, Ala.). Licensed for 1,157 beds, UAB Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in the nation by bed size and is the largest academic medical center in the state. Not only is it large, it is also well-respected: According to U.S. News & World Report's 2014-15 rankings, UAB Hospital is the No. 1 hospital in Alabama and is nationally ranked in eight specialties.

UAB Hospital was established in 1945 as the teaching hospital for the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Today, it houses several specialty centers, like the Women and Infants Center, the Russell Ambulatory Clinic and the UAB Heart and Vascular Center. Earlier this year, UAB Hospital received a 2015 Women's Choice Award acknowledging its UAB Breast Health Center's dedication to exceptional patient care and treatment.

Additionally, the hospital is home to the UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Research Center, which helped the hospital be named one of the top 50 in the nation for diabetes and endocrinology.
