The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (Columbus). Central Ohio's only academic medical, OSU Wexner Medical Center has roots in the 1800s, when the Willoughy (Ohio) Medical Center of Lake Erie was funded. Through several name changes and a move to Columbus in 1846, the medical center today is a national leader in research, education and patient care. The medical center took on its current name in 2012, recognizing its benefactor, philanthropist Leslie H. Wexner.
OSU Wexner is comprised of five hospitals: University Hospital, its flagship with more than 900 beds; University Hospital East; the James Cancer Hospital; the Ross Heart Hospital and Harding Hospital. All together, OSU Wexner has 1,246 beds, more than 19,540 employees and more than 800 residents and fellows. In addition to its hospitals, OSU Wexner includes two research institutes and a network of community-based primary and specialty care facilities.
The medical center opened The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute in December 2014. OSUCCC – James is the only cancer program in the U.S. featuring a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center aligned with a nationally ranked academic medical center and freestanding cancer hospital. It has more than 200 oncologists and contributes to the reasons OSU Wexner is ranked as the No. 30 hospital in the nation for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report in 2014-15.
OSU Wexner is also ranked as the best hospital in the Columbus metro area and is nationally ranked in four other specialties in addition to cancer on U.S. News & World Report's latest rankings. The medical center is highly advanced in EMR implementation, as it received HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 recognition in 2012.
