The healthcare system is the descendent of a 1998 merger between the New York Hospital and the Presbyterian Hospital. The New York Hospital, one of the oldest in the U.S., was founded in 1771, and the Presbyterian Hospital was founded in 1868. The hospital partners with the Weill Cornell Medical College and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. The system has been recognized on the U.S. News & World Report's most recent list of best hospitals as sixth best in the nation.
Not only has the hospital received awards for clinical excellence, it has also been recognized for providing patient-centered care. It received the Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Service from the Association of American Medical Colleges in 2014. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital received the prestigious award for its NewYork-Presbyterian Regional Health Collaborative, a program designed to address the health needs of the Washington Heights-Inwood community. The program has reduced emergency department visits, hospitalizations and 30-day readmissions, among other accomplishments.
