Nemours Children's Hospital (Orlando). Nemours Children's Hospital is classified as a small hospital with only 100 beds. A member of the Nemours Health System, which operates locations throughout Florida, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Nemours Children's Hospital in Orlando was one of just nine children's hospitals in the nation to land on Leapfrog Group's Top Hospitals list in 2014. Additionally, the hospital received a HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award in 2013 for efficient EHR use.
The health system was founded in 1936 through the formation of the Nemours Foundation with funds granted by Alfred I. DuPont after his death. The Alfred I. DuPont Institute, a pediatric orthopedic hospital in Wilmington, Del., opened its doors in 1940. The expansion into Florida began in the 1980s, where the health system established clinics and hospitals.
In designing the hospital in Orlando, which opened in 2012, the architects received input from patients, patients' families, nurses and physicians. The waiting rooms incorporate natural light and windows that open into gardens to enhance healing, spaces for children to play and comfortable couches for family members to sleep comfortably in patient rooms. The design is also eco-friendly, including specially designed exterior sunshades to block the sun, keep the building cooler year-round and reduce energy costs by 22 percent. In recognition of its sustainable design, Nemours Children's Hospital achieved LEED Gold Certification in 2013, becoming just one of three children's hospitals in the nation to do so.
In their own words:
Nemours Children's Hospital (NCH) opened in October, 2012 offering specialty pediatric care for the most-complex cases at Central Florida's only pediatric academic medical center.
In 2014, NCH was one of only nine children's hospitals in the country to earn the prestigious Top Hospital award from the Leapfrog Group, recognition of NCH's superior patient safety and quality.
Located in Orlando's Lake Nona Medical City, NCH is just blocks from a medical school and sophisticated biomedical research labs which allows Nemours physician-scientists to conduct research into new treatments and cures for pediatric illness and disease and train the next generation of care providers.
