Hospital for Special Surgery (New York). More than 25,000 surgical procedures are performed every year at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and surgeons there perform more hip and knee replacement surgeries than any other hospital nationwide. In 2014-15, U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital No. 1 in the country for orthopedics and No. 3 for rheumatology. Healthgrades named the hospital among America's Best Hospitals for Joint Replacements, Orthopedic Surgery and Spine Surgery in 2015.
HSS is the oldest orthopedic hospital in the country, founded in 1863 as The Hospital for the Relief of the Ruptured and Crippled and located in the home of surgeon-in-chief Dr. James A. Knight, a general practitioner. The hospital assumed its current name in 1940. HSS became a national center for treating polio victims in the 1930s, and in 1948, the hospital established one of the country's first bone banks.
The hospital features a variety of specialized centers within orthopedics, including the Institute for Cartilage Repair, Children and Adolescent Hand and Arm Center, Osteoporosis Prevention Center, Center for Hip Preservation, Musculoskeletal Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center and Women's Sports Medicine Center, among many others.
