Children's Hospital Colorado - 100 Great Hospitals in America | 2014

Children's Hospital Colorado (Aurora). Children's Hospital Colorado was incorporated in 1908, but its history dates back to 1897 in tents — where a staff of six treated children under the age of five in the fresh air and sunshine, back when Denver's climate was believed to be a cure for various diseases. Now, the hospital is located in Aurora, adjacent to the University of Colorado Hospital and School of Medicine.

Children's Hospital Colorado has received Magnet recognition for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center and was ranked as the No. 7 children's hospital in the country by U.S. News & World Report for 2013-14.

Children's Hospital Colorado's research efforts formally started in 1978, and since then, the hospital and its affiliates at the University of Colorado Department of Pediatrics are responsible for most of the pediatric research published in the Rocky Mountain area during the last decade. Children's Hospital Colorado is home to several internationally recognized medical milestones, including the discovery of toxic shock syndrome, the development of pediatric heart surgery techniques now used worldwide and the nation's first newborn screening program for cystic fibrosis.
