CHI St. Luke's Health Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center (Houston). Last year was transformational for CHI St. Luke's Health Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center. The 60-year old hospital — renowned for its heart programs and formerly known as St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital — became part of Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives and further expanded its affiliation with the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
At the center of this 718-bed teaching hub, which has more than 3,400 employees, is the award-winning Texas Heart Institute. THI was founded in 1962 by Denton A. Colley, MD, a CHI St. Luke's cardiac surgeon who performed the nation's first artificial heart implant procedure.
U.S. News & World Report ranked CHI St. Luke's nationally in four specialties last year, including a No. 10 ranking for cardiology and heart surgery. Fortune magazine and the Houston Business Journal have also highlighted CHI St. Luke's as one of the best companies to work for in the Houston metropolitan area.
Other major medical milestones at CHI St. Luke's, in addition to the first successful artificial heart implantation, include the first laser angioplasty procedure and the first successful heart transplantation. CHI is currently partnering with Baylor in a joint venture to build a hospital on Baylor's McNair campus. The new hospital will have up to 650 acute-care beds and will be completed in 2018.
